At the beginning of June I wrote a love letter to my Ricoh GRII. I still feel the same way about my little companion, but I think it is time for a follow-up.
In recent years my other cameras (DSLR’s) only have been collecting dust. I didn’t even bring them when I went on holidays. My last holidays were mainly focused on big cities so for street photography I only needed my Ricoh GR.
Last week I went to Terschelling, one of the Wadden Islands in the north of the Nederlands. The island’s length is 28km (17.6mi) long and the width just 4km (2.6mi). It has the most wonderful landscapes and variety you can imagine.
In that narrow width you will find successively a mudflat coast, a polder landscape, a forest, heathland, dunes and a wide sandy beach. It is an unique part of the world and therefor declared as UNESCO World Heritage.
As I said, I’m only using my Ricoh GR to photograph (and sometimes my mobile phone), so this week was no exception. And while the Ricoh GR is mainly known as one of the popular (and best) street photography cameras it is much more than that as I noticed again on Terschelling.
I have photographed landscapes with my Ricoh. A true landscape photographer will be happy to point out the shortcomings of this camera (just think of the fixed 28mm lens), but for the kind of photography I like, it is just fine. Of course, I also took some pictures of the funfair, which was also on the island that week.
Here are some of the photos I shot at Terschelling. Please tell me in the comments if you think those would have been better when using another camera type?
“To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place... I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”
— Elliott Erwitt
Open Call for Un/Taken
I’ve already published 10 episodes of Un/Taken, about the photo you did not take.
Read the previous episodes here to get inspired and recall that moment when you missed a shot that is gone forever.

Chaturday - Join the Discussion
In September I opened up Chat for subscribers to discuss photographs. I named it Chaturday.
For the last 7 weeks we talked about one photo at a time. A nice way to receive some feedback and comments on our photos. I’ve included two photos of subscribers but would like to extend that, so if you have a photo of which you would like to get some feedback, please leave a comment.
Ooh, I would love to see a color photo next week ;-)
That’s it for this week.
Till next time,

The Ricoh is an amazing little tool. I went to Denmark in September and for the first time left my dslr at home. There were moments I missed it, but most of the time I was so happy not to have to schlepp 4 or more kilos with me on our 10k hikes. I absolutely what that little thing can do. And your photos show it absolutely work for more than just street photography...
lovely shot! Any camera works!
