I think most people who have been following me for a while know that I'm a big fan of photo books and like to call myself a bit of a collector. One of the best things about photography is taking a book off the shelf and just flipping through it.
Although I shoot mainly in black and white and have a preference for conceptual & projects and landscapes, I can also enjoy a wide range of other photographic topics. My collection includes both classics and monographs by lesser known photographers, either in color or black and white, and of course almost all the books by my absolute favorite photographers, Anton Corbijn and Stephan Vanfleteren.
Buy books not gear
Whenever I see a secialized bookstore, I just need to go in and more often than not I come out with one or two new photo books. I just can’t help it.
I recently went to Antwerp, Belgium to see the exibition of Albarran Cabrera. Had already bought a book at Copyright Bookstore. Make sure to visit this bookstore when you’re in Antwerp!
At the exhibition I bought one of Albarran Cabrera’s amazing photographs, along with a publication of the exhibit.
How big was my surprise, when one of the photographers who will be featured in the 4th issue of Darkrooms Magazine send me a copy of his boek ‘Moments’. I planned to pay him a visit in his studio when I was in Antwerp, but things went in another direction.
Anyway, Marc T’Syen send his book, along with a signed print. I’m very pleased with this work, and besides the photos in this newsletter, a bigger selection will be presented in Darkrooms Magazine #4 (releasedate 2 July)
If you feel like you have a project, that will fit in the next issue of Darkrooms Magazine, please tell me a bit more and submit:
…and if you want to send me your photo book, that would really make my day.
That’s it for this newsletter.
Till next time,
DARKROOMS is a reader-supported, weekly photography newsletter. If you enjoy this newsletter, the best way to help it grow and support me is by becoming a free subscriber to receive new posts (or upgrade to support my work)
When it comes to photography I spend more money on books than on gear. Books never become obsolete or lose value. They are as good years later as when you first opened them.
photo books forever!
