Exactly one year and one day ago I started Darkrooms on Substack. A year in which a lot has happened. This newsletter will focus on some of the things I'm most proud of, or perhaps it's better to say most pleased with, as this is only the beginning. I have a lot of plans for the further development of Darkrooms.
It was early June 2022 when I was listening to the wonderful podcast Deep Natter by Jeffery Saddoris (writes
) and Sean Tucker. Jeffery was talking about Substack and the ease of publishing articles that were also emailed and could be read in a browser.I already had a blog running on Wordpress, but I did not like the idea of constantly updating it and adding new plugins, so I tried Substack.
I've never doubted the switch, it really is so easy to focus on the one thing you need to do: write. The fact that Substack keeps adding features like an iOS and Android app, Chat, Recommendations and most recently Notes tells me that I made the right choice.
What have I been up to with Darkrooms over the past year?
The plan was to publish a newsletter every week and that worked well. A total of 53 posts have been published so far.
These posts are divided into a few different topics. Most of them are just thoughts and ideas I have around photography, but I also have two types of interviews that I've done, 8 episodes of 'The Darkrooms of...' and 8 episodes of 'Un/Taken'.
Both interviews are intended for other photographers to enjoy and learn from. It's great to see how other photographers work and what they struggled with.
The Darkrooms of...' focuses on photographers and their process, both the analogue/digital darkroom and the mental darkroom where images are born.
‘Un/Taken’ is about the photograph that was not taken. The opportunity that will never come again and what the photographer learned from it. Next to it, the interviewees show the photo that surprised them.
Of all the others posts I’ve written there are a few of my own favorites. I will share two of them here:
I hope you find something of interest in the links I've shared here. New subscribers may have missed some of the older posts. They're still worth reading, I think. See the archive for all posts.
That’s it for this week, next week I will talk about some new features I’d like to add to Darkrooms.
Till next time,
