Elliott Erwitt passed away last week. There have been many tributes to this great photographer. Like this one from Magnum or this one from Process by Wesley Verhoeve. So good that I won't even try to write about how good and influential Elliott Erwitt was on photography.
About the dogs
What I do want to write about is a reaction
recently posted on one of my Instagram stories:
'“Every great photographer has their dog photo”
- Neil Milton
It was on this photo:
Though I do not call myself a great photographer, let alone compare my photo with those of the GOAT’s, I’m particularly fond of this photo.
The photo was a small gift, as I was aiming for the surfer - you can spot him right between the legs - as this dog came walking into the frame. The dog’s owner apologized for the dog ruining my shot, but I was just thrilled. It was what I was hoping for when I saw the dog running at the beach.
I’ve posted this photo, along with some others in one of October’s newsletters, accompanied by a quote of Elliott Erwitt:
How coincidental that I just picked a great quote by Elliott Erwitt, posted that dog photo on my Instagram account, received that reaction by
and then the sad loss of Elliott Erwitt made me rethink of that reaction and how many famous photographs of dogs there are. Not only by Mr. Erwitt but also GOAT’s like Martin Parr & Joseph Koudelka. See some examples in the galleries below, click to enlarge.I know there are many more famous photographs of dogs, but I am curious about your own photo of a dog. Please tell your story in the comments and send the photo to darkroomsmagazine@gmail.com and I’ll include it in the post (as you cannot comment with photos) afterwards.

And this one by Tom Meerman (who I interviewed in ‘The Dark Room Of… Tom Meerman’)
That’s it for this newsletter.
Till next time,

I was in the middle of a job photographing the opening of a film festival when I read Elliott Erwitt had died. Despite his 95 years, I was still shocked. He seemed he would just keep going. He'll be dearly missed.
