About photo books and magazines
I'm a keen collector of photography books, they're a massive source of inspiration to me.
This week I received a copy of the book ‘Het fotograafschap’ (translated: Being a photographer) by Kees Molders. Kees is a photography friend and has already published a book about Snapseed. I interviewed him for 'The Dark Rooms Of...' a while back, so if you haven't read it yet, here’s your chance.
Het fotograafschap / Being a photographer is meant for club-based photographers. It has 144 pages and includes chapters on visual literacy, selecting, photo discussion, judging and more. The interview I had with Kees for ‘The Dark Rooms Of…’ is represented in the book, together with the questions I usually ask, as an excercise for photographers to learn about their own way of working and understand what ‘being a photographer’ means for them.
Next to that Kees interviewed me about composing a body of work. But what I like the most is the fact that three articles I’ve written for Darkrooms are also included in the book.
This book is written in Dutch, so not for most Darkrooms readers, but if you can read Dutch, this is highly recommended. You can order it via Mijnbestseller
#BuyBooksNotGear
I’m a keen collector of photography books. Not only monographs, but also books filled with essays, like Stephen Shore’s ‘Modern Instances’ or the brillant ‘The Creative Act’ by Rick Rubin. I will write a review on those soon, as they are such an inspiration.
I noticed I’ve posted a lot of the books I bought recently on Instagram, each one accompanied with the hashtag #buybooksnotgear, a hashtag I fully support.
Do you also like to buy photo books to patiently browse through instead of the ever-flowing social media? Let me know in the comments.

I was a big buyer but gave it up years ago. Reason? they’re expensive and hardly enlightening me nowadays. Rarely buy one now. Some suggestions in my post

Just picked the book off the shelf and I can see your acknowledgment. It’s a great book - a thoughtful exploration of the pace and strains of modern urban living.
