Let's face it - almost nobody posts a photo these days without at least some tweaking. But when does a little touch-up cross into "that never happened" territory? Here's why I think photographers might want to be upfront about their digital sleight of hand:
Teaching moments make better photographers
When photographers are honest about their process, it creates learning opportunities for everyone. A breathtaking image might seem impossibly perfect and discouraging to beginners until they learn it actually took five hours of editing, three return trips to the location, and specific weather conditions. Being transparent about techniques helps demystify the craft and allows others to grow their skills too. Plus, there's something genuinely satisfying about sharing knowledge rather than guarding "secrets" about how you achieved a particular look.
