In this week's edition, I'm taking you on a slightly different journey. While I typically show photography projects or showcase compelling visual narratives, today I'm pulling back the curtain on a creative experiment that's been unfolding somewhat quietly for the past 30 weeks.
Some of you may have noticed my separate newsletter on Substack, a dedicated space where I've been exploring the delicate art of pairing photographs with haikus: ALPHAGRAPHY. This fun project has allowed me to revisit both recent captures and archive treasures, breathing new life into these images through the constraint and elegance of this traditional Japanese poetry form.
The process has taught me a lot. By distilling emotions and observations into just seventeen syllables, I've discovered new dimensions in my own work. Each haiku serves as both companion and counterpoint to its paired photo, creating a dialogue between visual and verbal expression that sometimes reveals unexpected connections.
For those interested in expanding your creative practice, I can definitely recommend this approach. It's a really refreshing way to see your portfolio with new eyes and develop a deeper relationship with your own visual language.
See how the blend of images and words can elevate both art forms and transform how we experience photography.
Ducks carve liquid peaks
Mountains rise, then fade again
Stillness sways with them
Ghosts flicker in stacks
memories lit from within
a last lamp still hums
Steps echo on stone
Bridge curves above the canal
Pillar splits the path
Dust clings to silence
a coat dreams of vanished men
boots cradle the dusk
Fading skies behind
Memories in glass remain
Road unfolds ahead
Like these haikus?
Every Saturday I post a new haiku + photo on ALPHAGRAPHY, so head over there for more.
