This newsletter will be a little different than usual. Lots of things have happened last week so I want to focus on that.
One of the major differences in last week is the release of...
Notes
Notes is a new space on Substack for us to share links, short posts, quotes, photos, and more. I plan to use it for things that don’t fit in the newsletter, like recommendations, brainfarts or quick questions.
How to join
Head to substack.com/notes or find the “Notes” tab in the Substack app. As a subscriber to Darkrooms, you’ll automatically see my notes. Feel free to like, reply, or share them around!
You can also share notes of your own. I hope this becomes a space where every reader of Darkrooms can share thoughts, ideas, and interesting quotes from the things we're reading on Substack and beyond.
This is my first note with a photo:
I really like this feature. Another advantage of Notes is the possibility to grow your audience by recommending other Substacks to your followers.
And so it has been in the case of Darkrooms. We had many new subscribers last week. Thank you all for subscribing and I hope you enjoy these weekly newsletters.
Read earlier episodes & topics
This newsletter was started in July 2022 and most of the topics are still relevant today. I suggest - if you haven't already - that you read some of the previous episodes.
Next to that there are two topics in which a photographer is interviewed. ‘The Darkrooms of…’ and Un/Taken. Both can be read via the links in the header.
One other thing about not striving for the newest.
Last week I almost came down with G.A.S. (Gear Acquiring Syndrome). The news broke that Pentax had developed a monochrome DSLR, the K-3 Mark III Monochrome. Since I'm always shooting in black and white, I really want a camera with a monochrome sensor. Of course, Leica has had such a camera on the market for a while now, but at $9,500 it's out of my reach. The Pentax has a retail price of around $2,200, which is more in line with what I am willing to pay. To cut a long story short, I looked at some reviews and found that the benefits for me would not justify the purchase. If the owner of the Pentax, Ricoh, plans to put a black and white sensor in the Ricoh GR series, I will definitely reconsider!
Have you read my earlier post on Gear Acquiring Syndrome?
Special thank you for subscribers
As well as writing this newsletter, I'm also working on ebooks about photography. One of them is already available on Gumroad. It's a collection of inspirational quotes and you can buy it for as little as $2, but... Especially for subscribers, you can get this ebook for free by using the code below (only visible via email):
Discount code: ————
Reading this post without being a subscriber? No worries, everything is free, but you won't get to see discount codes like the one mentioned above. You might want to consider being a subscriber (it's free) or get my ebook for less than a cup of coffee.
That’s it for this week.
Till next time,
