Best of... Darkrooms Magazine - Lynn Fraser
A special newsletter highlighting an outstanding project from one of the previous Darkroom Magazine issues
Because I like to see as many photography enthusiasts as possible enjoying outstanding work, I decided to add an additional (monthly) newsletter: a special Sunday newsletter highlighting one of the past projects featured in an earlier issue of Darkrooms Magazine.
Today I highlight the Scottish photographer
. Last week she was announced Amateur Photographer of the Year 2024. Congratulations! Some of the images that provided that honorable title were also published in her series Mundari Cattle Camp. EnjoyLynn Fraser is a photographer based in the Highlands of Scotland. Travelling the world with her camera, Lynn likes to make images of the people she meets, expressing through these her experience of the richness of our global humanity.
In February 2023, Lynn travelled to fairly isolated parts of South Sudan and Ethiopia, visiting different communities and experiencing a number of cultures. A particular highlight of the trip was an extended visit to a Mundari cattle camp famous for the Ankole Watusi cattle with their long horns. These camps are ‘manned’ by the young men and women, teens and children, all of whom have a role to play in the constant daily management of the livestock and camp: massaging ash onto the cattle, collecting dung and firewood to fuel the fires, collecting water and cooking. It was evident that the Mundari have a palpable connection with their animals; much care and attention was given daily to each animal. The camp operated to a quotidian rhythm as the cattle were driven out to graze each morning to the beat of drums; a process that was reversed in the afternoon as the cattle made their way back each to their own tethering post. The fires that are lit each afternoon to repel flies and mosquitoes give a smoky, hazy atmosphere that produces scenes that have a Biblical feel to them; a sense of time being suspended.
